Dr. Anoop Koshy

Dr Anoop Koshy is an Interventional, Structural and General Cardiologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Austin Health, Warringal Hospital & the Epworth Hospital. Additionally, Dr Koshy is the head of the Cardiology in transplatation Centre at the Austin Health. Originally from Tasmania, Anoop pursued his medical education at The University of Tasmania, graduating with First Class Honours in 2010. After completing his General Cardiology training at Eastern Health and Monash Heart, he undertook four years of advanced sub-specialization in Interventional and Structural Heart Interventions at Austin Health and at the prestigious Mount Sinai Medical Centre in New York (highest volume Catheterization Laboratory in the USA). Anoop has successfully performed over 1,000 percutaneous coronary interventions (stents), and over 300 transcatheter (keyhole) valve replacements including a number of first-in-man procedures and keyhole valve implants.

His clinical interests include general and interventional cardiology, comprising of assessment of chest pain, arrhythmias, coronary angioplasty with expertise in coronary calcium modification techniques and intravascular imaging. Additionally, Anoop also specialises in management of patients with aortic stenosis using keyhole Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge-Repair for mitral regurgitation using MitraClip and patient formen ovale closure.

Experience

Originally from Launceston, Dr Koshy completed his medical degree from the University of Tasmania where he graduated with First Class Honours. He completed his Physicians training Cardiology training through the Alfred Hospital and completed specialization in Cardiology in 2017. Given his interest in Interventional Cardiology and minimally invasive transcatheter valve replacements (TAVI, MitraClips), he completed further fellowship training through the Austin Hospital and Mount Sinai Heart, New York, USA. Mount Sinai Hospital, NY is among the Top Cardiac and Cardiac Surgical centres in the world as ranked by Newsweek. During his tenure, Dr Koshy performed over 1,000 percutaneous coronary interventions (stents), and hundreds of transcatheter (keyhole) aortic valve replacements including a number of first-in-man procedures and keyhole mitral valve implants working alongside world-leading cardiologists.

Research

Anoop is passionate about medical research and successfully completed his PhD where he pioneered the development of Australia’s first cardiac risk stratification protocol in liver transplant recipients. Having published over 100 manuscripts in some of the world’s top cardiology journals, authored book chapters, Anoop has been awarded scholarships from the National Heart Foundation, National Health & Medical Research Council and nominated for over 20 Young-Investigator Awards. His research has been featured in Channel 7 News and on the cover of The Age Newspaper.
